Limited practice still leads to top performances

In their final indoor tune-up, track and field athletes discovered what they were capable of doing, despite a lack of practice time heading into the NSU Relays Tuesday at the Barnett Center.

Sophia Von Wald of Herreid-Selby Area had not even attempted the long jump this spring before she went out and won the event with a personal record by nearly a foot.

“It was definitely the first time in quite a while,” said Von Wald, noting that her school does not have an indoor jumping pit. “I’m very happy with how I did.”

She said her off-season regime likely played a role in her success in the initial meet of the season.

“Training a lot in the off season really helped me, I think,” Von Wald said. “A lot of lifting, and a lot of running and repetition and working on form.”

Von Wald, who finished fourth in the 55-meter dash, was also a key member on a pair of Wolverines relay squads. The senior at Selby said she enjoys being a part of team races.

“With team events I feel they can almost be more fun, because you get to run with your friends,” Von Wald said, “especially when you see your friends do well in races, it’s great. I like it.”

Aberdeen Roncalli’s Matthew Martinez found himself running a distance that he had never run before, but that did nothing to slow him down. Martinez ran a strong leg on his team’s winning sprint medley relay. Other team members included Jayden Munroe, Caden Shelton and Maddox May.

“It was like 640 meters. I’ve never ran that before,” Martinez said. “I didn’t really know how to pace myself. It was something I was guessing on. It didn’t go terrible.”

Martinez also ran other relay races. While the senior understands the importance of being able to run indoors at this time of the year, he definitely prefers being outdoors.

“It’s always a good start to see how you’re doing at the beginning of the season,” Martinez said. “Indoors is not my favorite because of all the turns with these longer races, so definitely looking forward to some outdoors, but indoors are good to see where you’re at, see what you need to work on, a good conditioner.”

After missing his sophomore year because of Covid, and most of his junior year because of injury, Martinez is looking forward to his final year, especially in his favorite race.

“I’m really looking to see how well my 800 can do,” he said “see how much I’ve improved from those two years, trying to make it to state in that.”

Colton Mohr of North Central had just one chance to practice hurdles this spring, but that did not impact him during the meet. The senior at Edmunds Central took first place in the 55-meter hurdles.

He said he can do better than what he showed in first effort of the season.

“I like to start out fast and go as hard as I can,” Mohr said. “Technique wasn’t really something that I did very well today, but it will improve over the season and my time will improve, too.”

Mohr, who qualified for state in the 110-meter high hurdles last season, said there is a big difference in running the 55s. He said the start is crucial in the shorter race.

“It’s pretty big, because there’s not a whole lot of time to make up for it,” Mohr said. “You have to start off quicker than everyone else right away.”

Roncalli’s Madisen Martin also made the most of her opportunity in an event she had never run before indoors. The sophomore competed in the 1,600-meter run.

As opposed to circling an outdoor track four times in the race like she has experienced before, the indoor race featured 10 laps. Soon Martin found herself not even knowing for sure what place she was in during the race with runners scattered all over the track.

“I honestly didn’t know. I just told myself to just keep pushing,” Martin said. “I knew that I had to be somewhere up front and I didn’t really see that many girls, and I told myself not to look back because that would slow me down. I just told myself to go get the next girl.”

Martin ended up finishing third in that event. Like many distance runners experience when competing indoors, she said it was tougher to breathe than when running outdoors.

“When I got done running I noticed that I was coughing a lot,” Martin said. “Usually when I’m outdoors I don’t have that issue.”

Aberdeen Roncalli won the girls’ 1,600-meter relay. Runners were Jaz Hart-Crissman, Ava Hanson, Jaidyn Feickert and Ella Ulmer. Munroe also took first place in the triple jump.

Roncalli coach Mark Stone was pleased with the total team effort of the Cavaliers.

“The thing that we’re proud of today is wherever they ended up in terms of a place, most of our kids performed better today than they did seven days ago,” Stone said. “That’s one big check. That’s one thing that we ask of them.”

He praised the effort of Roncalli’s various teams in the 1,600-meter relay in addressing the other thing he asks of the athletes.

“The second one always is, you owe it to yourself, you owe it to your teammates, the other people in green and gold, and you also owe it to the Lord who made you and gifted you, to give your best,” Stone said. “And whatever happened in those relays at the end that’s evidence. You know the 4X4 sort of exposes that. It exposes that kind of effort or lack of effort.”
