A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of March 20-26:

Last year on March 20, 2021: Two South Dakotans finished their careers among the top five scorers in boys’ basketball history as Matthew Mors of Yankton finished fourth (2,707 points) and Connor Libis of Dell Rapids St. Mary finished third (2,731). Meanwhile, Dakota Valley senior Paul Bruns finished his career with 2,206 (15th )

It is the first time South Dakota featured three prep seniors who ended up with more than 2,000 career points. The state now has 38 high school boys’ who have scored more than 2,000 points. Libis (Briar Cliff), Mors (Wisconsin) and Bruns (North Dakota) will play college basketball next season.

The all-time leading South Dakota high school boys’ scorer is Louie Krogman of White River (3,521) followed by Don Jacobsen of Lake Norden second (2,825). Milt Sorenson of Wakonda is fifth (2,577) followed by: 6. Josh Mueller of West Central (2,563); 7. Chuck Welke Jr. of Warner (2,550); 8. Bob Swanhorst of Cresbard (2,402); 9. LaMoine Torgerson of Forestburg (2,381); 10. Jerry Wingen of Canova (2,333); 11. Colby Fitzgerald, Dell Rapids St. Mary (2,294); 12. Jim Dyer, Willow Lake (2,256); 13. Ryan Van Zee, Armour (2,246); and 14. Steve Brown, Hamlin (2,212).

10 years ago on March 23, 2012: The pro roping team of Brock Hanson of Arizona and Ryan Motes of Texas tied the world record of 3.3 seconds. Hanson was riding RU Drifting Joe, which was raised by Ruzsa Quarter Horses near Selby.

20 years ago on March 20, 2002: Coach Paul Rozell and his Presentation College women’s basketball team is celebrating its third-place finish in the recent U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association National Tournament in Maine. The Saints were led this season by seniors Tracelyn Nedd and Julie Landmark.

30 years ago on March 21, 1992: It was a busy Saturday in Aberdeen with the last day of State B boys’ basketball tourney at the Barnett Center, a youth wrestling tourney with more than 400 wrestlers at the Aberdeen Civic Arena and the state men’s bowling tourney continuing at the Village Bowl.

40 years ago on March 25, 1982: Northern State senior Scott Kusler was named to the NAIA All-District 12 Team. Other South Dakota college basketball players on the team were Dennis Hudson of Huron, Brad Buche of Black Hills and Randy Gross of Mount Marty.

50 years ago on March 26, 1972: Four lettermen are among 10 athletes who have reported for coach Bob Sorge’s Northern State tennis team. The top returnees for the Wolves include Tim Davies and Bob Larson of Aberdeen, Roger Pierce and John McNeil of Sioux Falls and Joe Barthel of Watertown.
