WEBSTER – After suffering a broken finger in a game on Tuesday, Damon Opdahl didn’t even know what to expect Friday night. Then with the game on the line, the junior took over at the Webster Armory.

Opdahl scored 12 fourth-quarter points and powered Waubay-Summit to a 66-51 win over Warner during the Region 1B boys’ basketball tournament.

“We didn’t even know if he was going to be able to shoot the ball,” said Waubay-Summit coach Mark Amdahl. “As soon as the atmosphere hits, he’s a gamer. I thought the pain would probably go away, and he rose to the occasion.”

The Monarchs made things interesting the entire way and sliced a double-digit margin down to 52-46 with 4:18 left in the game. Seconds later, Opdahl scored on a three-point play and then added a three-point shot to push the margin right back to double digits. He later added four more points as the Mustangs pulled away at the finish.

“After Tuesday’ game when it happened, I wasn’t real sure how it was going to work,” Opdahl said. “I thought I was going to have to play with my left hand for most of the game, but we were able to tape it up and take some Tylenol and it worked out, I guess.”

Opdahl finished with 17 points, 13 rebounds and five steals, and put the finishing touches on his team’s biggest win so far this season.

“He’s a closer. He’s an absolute gamer,” said Warner coach Derek Hoellein. “I told him in the line, he’s one of the toughest guys I’ve seen. To play through what he’s playing with now is pretty incredible. Hats off to him. He’s a good player.”

Jonathon Johnston scored 16 points, Seth Gaikowski 13 and J Gulbaa 11 for the Mustangs.

Waubay-Summit’s balanced scoring attack foiled Warner’s goal of scoring at least 50 points.

“50 was kind of our magic number,” Hoellein said. “Usually when we get to 50 we win the game, so we hit our mark, but man we just couldn’t score with them tonight.”

Hunter Cramer scored a game-high 24 points for Warner. He caused Waubay-Summit issues the entire night with his ability to beat defenders off the dribble.

“If he gets one step, he’s by you,” Amdahl said. “He’s really hard to contain after that.”

Trekk Hannahs followed with 14 points. Peyton Jung scored four points, hauled down nine rebounds and blocked five shots.

The Monarchs lost a previous matchup to Waubay-Summit by 27 points, but this contest played out much differently.

“They got way better on defense,” Opdahl said. “It was a playoff game. Everyone was more lively. There was a lot of energy in the gym.”

The Monarchs finished their season at 13-9, despite Cramer missing a chunk of the season with an injury.

“When Hunter went out a lot of kids stepped up and filled some roles that they weren’t in,” Hoellein said. “I thought we had a great season and I’m proud of our guys.”

Waubay-Summit improved to 19-3 and heads back to the SoDak 16 where they fell last season one game short of reaching the state tournament.

Amdahl said the players have been hard at work ever since.

“It started a week after last season,” Amdahl said of time spent in the gym and in the weight room. “I’m proud of those kids, because they put a lot of time in when no one was watching.”
