Please take time to look

I may have said this before, but bare with me. When it is 1:30 in the morning and I am busy cranking out photographs while listening to my music play list or favorite podcast, I often wonder- “Will anyone bother to look at these images I am making into a gallery?”

It is no reflection on the quality of my work but rather an understanding of how busy we all are these days and how fractured our attention spans have become. As a person old enough to remember “being” my father’s television remote and turning the knob in order to select one of only three available channels, I marvel at now having several dozen channels and numerous streaming services to choose from everyday. Not to mention all there is to explore on the internet via your smartphone or laptop.

In that same vein of thinking, I remember when the first images I took were on film that had to be dropped off for processing which required a 24-48 hour wait. The time span between shutter clicking to finished product has become a matter of minutes today with the advent of digital photography. But the question still remains: “Will someone take the time to examine and appreciate everything in that image that captured a moment in time during a sporting event?”

My game nights vary from day to day, week to week and season to season. This time of year in the heat of the basketball playoff season there are nights with two and three games at multiple locations around town, as well as nights with one game after another at the same venue. All of this culminating in three classes of three day, 12 game overdoses of basketball that are the state tournaments.

While I get lost and caught up in the heat of producing content (which believe me I enjoy doing), my hope is that the readers of this website and the people who follow me on Twitter do take a few minutes out of their day to really look at the galleries of images. Not because my ego needs stroking, but because it really is a bit of a miracle that a camera can freeze a moment of time that shows all the emotion and strain that results from all the hours of practice that these athletes put in all season just to get to these playoffs.

I appreciate you taking the time to look and I will continue to do my best to make it worth your while as the basketball playoffs start. I just have to remember to pace myself. Track season will be here before I know it.
