WARNER – Aberdeen Roncalli suffered a scoring draught at the worst possible time Tuesday night.

The Cavaliers were outscored 11-0 to start the fourth quarter on the way to a 51-34 loss to Warner in the quarterfinals of the Region 1B boys’ basketball tournament.

Roncalli trailed by eight points after the third period before the Monarchs took control.

Cavaliers coach Dan Gallagher said that Warner coach Derek Hoellein devised a good scheme which contributed to Roncalli’s offensive struggles.

“Credit to them. Derek made a great adjustment during the season. He switched his zone to that 2-3. They execute really well. They made things hard to come by,” Gallagher said. “I don’t think we did the best job of finding inside touches from our high post or low post, but then again they took a lot away from us. Even in the zone, they forced a lot of turnovers for us in the first half and then in the second half.”

The offensive woes have been something the Cavaliers have dealt with from time to time this season and it was even more magnified with the season on the line.

“It’s kind of been something for us all season where we just struggle to score at certain points,” Gallagher said, “and tonight it hit us a little harder than it usually does.”

While the Cavaliers were searching for offense, it was just a matter of time before the Monarchs caught fire. Gallagher said it all started with a Peyton Jung shot from the corner.

“They’ve got shooters and they let us know,” Gallagher said.

Warner featured a balanced attack on the way to the victory.

Levi Scepaniak scored 11 points, Trekk Hannahs and Jung each followed with 10, and Hunter Cramer finished with eight. The Monarchs, 13-8, face Waubay-Summit in the semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Webster.

Zee Mounga led a balanced Roncalli attack with 10 points. Keegan Stewart and Jayden Munroe each added seven.

The Cavaliers closed their season with a 6-15 record.

“One thing about this group is they have great character. After every game, win or loss, they’re in the stands cleaning up. They’re there to support the youth teams in tournaments and games, and they play hard no matter what,” Gallagher said. “As much as we would have liked to see the wins come a little bit more often, you can’t fault the guys. I’m just proud of everything that they’ve done and for who they are, and for what they will continue to become.”
