SIOUX FALLS – Waubay-Summit turned to its defense to earn its first trip to the State B boys’ basketball tournament Tuesday night.

The Mustangs held Platte-Geddes to just four third-quarter points on the way to a 49-44 victory during SoDak 16 action at the Sioux Falls Roosevelt gym. The win marks the first time that Waubay-Summit will compete in a state tournament as a cooperative. Summit’s only State B boys’ appearance came in 1990, while Waubay’s last state tourney came in 1955.

The Mustangs needed to hold off a Platte-Geddes rally down the stretch. Waubay-Summit led by 13 points heading into the fight eight minutes. Damon Opdahl scored six of his team’s seven fourth-quarter points.

Waubay-Summit received points from six different players in a 14-4 third-quarter surge which gave the Mustangs a cushion to work with.

Opdahl finished with 20 points, while Seth Gaikowski followed with nine. J Gulbraa and Jonathon Johnston each added six.

The Mustangs (20-3) will face top-seeded and defending state champion De Smet in the first game of the opening round of the state tournament at Noon on Thursday, March 17 at Wachs Arena.
