Athletes shine during Patriot Invitational

REDFIELD – It may have been cool and windy, but those conditions did nothing to slow down the competitors at the Patriot Invitational track and field meet Friday in Redfield.

Citing workouts in even worse weather, athletes took advantage of their first outdoor meet of the spring.

“It was tough, but the wind has been just as bad at practices, so it’s not anything we’re not used to,” said Aberdeen Roncalli’s Morgan Fiedler. “We’ve been practicing into the wind and we knew it was going to be windy today, so I think that we prepared for it.”

Fiedler had her usual stellar day, despite not competing in any indoor meets this spring. The senior won the triple jump, the long jump and the 100-meter dash.

While she finished first in all of her individual events, Fiedler was not too concerned about her overall marks.

“It was the first meet. I feel like the first meet is always kind of a trial and error,” she said “You can’t really beat up yourself for bad jumps or bad times. It’s never going to be your best times or your best jumps in the first meet, so I was good with anything.”

Fiedler won a state championship in the triple jump last year, despite not even attempting the event until late in the season.

Naturally, expectations have changed a bit for that situation this year.

“It does feel different. I definitely did not expect to win triple jump last year like I’ve said probably a thousand times,” Fiedler said, “but I’m going to set that as a goal this year.”

Frederick’s Morgan Sumption also was not impacted much by the windy elements on the way to winning both the 800-meter run and the 1,600-meter run.

“Just at practice (Thursday) we bumped down our base runs like we do before a meet and that wind was just awful,” the sophomore said. “So, I was like you know what, no matter how bad the wind is, it’s better than (Thursday).”

Sumption trailed Highmore-Harrold’s Autumn Fallis for half of the 1,600-meter race before taking control on the third lap. The race was reminiscent of last year’s state meet when Sumption passed Fallis with about 100 meters remaining.

“I knew I had to keep it close if I was going to pass her,” Sumption said. “I was expecting to pass her at maybe the fourth lap, but I just thought it’s the third lap, one more, I may as well take advantage of it now. It took a lot of mental strength to do that. That’s what I’m working on this season.”

Groton’s Andrew Marzahn is working on his blocks. The junior sprinter knows he has no time to waste during his short-distance races.

“When you practice blocks you can have somebody behind you and emulating the gun,” Marzahn said. “It’s definitely something you can practice.”

Marzahn, who won the 100-meter dash and ran an opening leg on the winning 400-meter relay on Friday, said the blocks can make all the difference.

“I like to pride myself on my blocks,” he said. “My top speed is definitely not as good as some other guys here, so I think blocks are definitely my best.”

While most of the athletes on Friday were looking to build on last year’s performances, one in particular was looking to regain his form from three years ago.

Clark-Willow Lake’s Avery Nichols finished second in both the shot put and discus in his return to the sport. Nichols last competed as a freshman before working the past two years.

He decided to come back out his senior year on the encouragement of some family members.

“My dad and grandpa both talked me into it again,” Nichols said, “and I said, ‘Well, why not? What’s it going to hurt?’ It’s a lot of fun.”

Nichols is still working on his form in the shot put. While other throwers had more lift, Nichols’ attempts were a bit lower.

“I was coming out low when I was releasing it,” Nichols said. “If I would have been coming out higher, I probably could have gotten another foot or so out of it.”

Like all of the other athletes, Nichols has some goals in mind for the upcoming season.

“I’d like to hit 50 foot in shot put before the end of the year. That’s my end goal,” he said. “I think I can do it. It’s something where I have to practice my slide again and get back into the same groove I was in.”

Clark-Willow Lake’s Tyler O’Neill won the 800 and 1,600 and ran on a winning relay team. Hitchcock-Tulare’s TJ Salmen won both the 110-meter high hurdles and 300-meter intermediate hurdles.

Other Roncalli athletes won numerous events in addition to Fiedler.

Assistant Roncalli coach Terry Dosch pointed out the efforts of Ella Ulmer (who won the 300-meter intermediate hurdles), Jayden Munroe (who was second in the triple jump), Maddox May (who won the 200-meter dash and ran on a winning relay), Matthew Martinez (who was second in the 400-meter dash and ran on a winning relay), and Garrett Griffin. The Cavaliers won the boys’ 800-meter relay.

“I thought our kids competed well,” Dosch said. “There were a lot of things that were fun to watch.”

Dosch noted that it was good to see May in action.

“This is kind of like his first track meet,” Dosch said. “His freshman year got Covided out, and last year he was banged up most of the year.”

Overall, Dosch said he believes the athletes saw some of the potential that they possess heading into the season.

“I think we had some kids that got kind of excited,” Dosch said, “because they said, hmm, maybe there’s some potential there for us.”

The Cavaliers are scheduled to compete in a meet at Groton on Tuesday.
