HURON – Olivia Braun took medalist honors to help lead Aberdeen Central to the team title during the Huron Triangular golf tournament at Broadland Creek Golf Course on Thursday.
“We got to accomplish a few things,” said Central coach Kim Zimmerman. “One big thing was having the whole varsity team play on the same course on the same day and kind of look at some scores. That’s a goal right now to see where people are at with their scores. We got that accomplished and in doing so we won the triangular, so a good day all in all.”
Once again, Braun led the Golden Eagles, shooting a 74. She finished runner-up in a previous outing.
“Olivia just had another outstanding day. That’s two back-to-back that she’s put together,” Zimmerman said. “I can’t say enough about how she played today in terms of her score and everything. I’m very proud of her, just kind of coming out the chute right away and really just playing extremely well.”
Emma Dohrer had the third best overall score on the day with an 82. Leah Gough followed with a 91, while Morgan Jones finished with a 94.
Despite the team victory, Zimmerman said there are still things that need improvement.
“Our short game gave us a lot of problems today,” he said. “In defense of the girls, when you’re talking about the short game and the greens – they haven’t been mowed really, still some sand on there, they haven’t grown out, haven’t been watered – I’m going to give them a little break there, but we still have a lot of work to do with our short game and improving in that area.”
Central heads to Pierre for a meet on Tuesday. Zimmerman is looking forward to that event because he expects to see some West River competition there, plus the course will be the same one that the upcoming Eastern South Dakota Conference tournament will be played on next month.
In two tourneys so far this season, the Golden Eagles have produced rounds of 342 and 348.
“That’s a good place to start. It’s something to build on,” Zimmerman said. “Like I told the girls, a win is a win and I’m not going to take that away from them, but at the same time we can’t be satisfied with where we’re at, because I know there’s of lot of room for improvement. We’re just going to try to build off these two scores that we’ve had so far.”
