SIOUX FALLS – Aberdeen Central turned to its depth to help power a pair of tennis victories on Tuesday.

The Golden Eagles rolled to an 8-1 win over Sioux Falls Jefferson and a 9-0 victory over Sioux Falls Roosevelt.

“I thought we played really well, especially singles,” said Central coach Trent Kurtz.

The squad used a bit of a different lineup due to an illness to Mitchell Hofer. Jack Riggs filled in at number two doubles and won a pair of close matches with partner AJ Prehn.

“I thought him and AJ played really well and got two very good wins in two competitive matches,” Kurtz said. “They played really well in a super breaker against Jefferson, and in a second-set tiebreaker at Roosevelt where they played really well.”

Michael Frohling filled Hofer’s spot at flight three singles and split a pair of matches, losing in a super breaker and getting a straight-set win.

“I thought Mikey Frohling subbed in at three singles and played well,” Kurtz said.

The play of Riggs and Frohling confirmed something that Kurtz has said since the start of the season.

“We talked all year about how I thought we had 7 or 8 guys that could help us on varsity on days like this  when we need them and both did,” Kurtz said.

The closest match came at flight two singles where Ian Ahlberg overcame a rough start and scored a super-tiebreak victory. The senior trailed 4-1 to start the first set, regrouped to win the second set at love, then led early in the super before having to survive a match point against him before pulling out a 13-11 win.

Sekou Gogue is also rounding into form coming back from an injury. He won three of his four singles sets by 6-4 margins.

“He’s just kind of getting into form so he’s just getting better and better,” Kurtz said. “Hopefully, by the ESD and state he’s playing his best tennis and I think he will be.”

Central now heads west on Thursday for a three-day event in Rapid City. The format is scheduled to include duals and a tournament, but my need to be modified because of the weather.
