SIOUX FALLS – Aberdeen Central ran into one of the top Class AA teams and one of the top Class A squads during a tennis triangular Monday at the Match Pointe indoor tennis center.

Central fell to Sioux Falls Washington 9-0 and dropped a 7-2 decision to Mitchell.

“Washington is as a good as advertised,” said Central coach Trent Kurtz. “They’re really, really good.”

Kurtz said Mitchell is one of the top Class A teams in the state and was pleased with the way the Golden Eagles played against the Kernels.

“I thought we played pretty well against them,” Kurtz said. “We got a couple of wins and had a chance at a couple more.”

One of those wins came at flight one doubles where the team of Gabe Goetz and Ian Ahlberg set the tone early on the way to a 10-5 victory.

“They got off to a really good start by winning some deuce games,” Kurtz said. “The first three games of the match all went to deuce and we won them all, so we were up two breaks right away, and then just kind of never looked back.”

Kurtz said Goetz and Ahlberg never lost back-to-back games during the 10-game pro set to make the double break hold up.

“Probably won six deuce points throughout the match, played the big points really well,” Kurtz said, “which is what you hope for out of your seniors.”

The other win came from seventh-grader Mitchell Hofer at third flight singles.

Hofer adjusted to his opponent’s style of play to pull away for a 10-5 victory.

“Mitchell Hofer played really well. The kid he played really has a big game,” Kurtz said. “I thought as the match went on, Mitchell got used to his pace.”

Hofer trailed 4-3 before winning seven of the last eight games to secure the win.

“He just turned the momentum and kind of ran away with it at the end, and played really well,” Kurtz said.

The Eagles came close in a couple of other matches. The flight three doubles team of Hofer and AJ Prehn had a match point before finally succumbing in a tiebreaker 10-8. Kurtz said the tandem had a few volleys they weren’t quite able to put away.

Last week the same duo lost in a super-tiebreaker 20-18.

“We just have to figure out a way to finish those volleys, finish those points, in the big tie-breaks,” Kurtz said, “but they played really well.”

Central is back in action again today taking on Sioux Falls Jefferson at 11 a.m., and Sioux Falls Roosevelt at 2 p.m.
