A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of April 24-30:

Last year on April 24, 2021: Mitchell radio broadcaster Tim Smith is retiring after almost 50 years chronicling Mitchell High School, Dakota Wesleyan University and area sports for KORN and later KMIT. Smith, 70, figures he has called about 4,300 basketball games and 800 football games in traveling about 25,000 miles per year forhis job.

10 years ago on April 29, 2012: The Northern State baseball team nipped Concordia-St. Paul 3-2. Robert Fahlin had the game-winning RBI on a single that scored Zach Miller. Clint Manzo was the winning pitcher as he struck out five and allowed only two hits for the Wolves.

20 years ago on April 29, 2002: Former USD pole vaulter Derek Miles won the Drake Relays. Miles has the third best jump in the world this year.

30 years ago on April 30, 1992: There are only three Class A schools that offer tennis in South Dakota and former NSU All-American wrestler Bob Hirsch has ties to all three schools. He is a graduate of Vermillion; he is the wrestling and tennis coach at Milbank; and his teams regularly face conference foe Aberdeen Roncalli.

40 years ago on April 29, 1982: Kris Tschetter shot a par 36 at the Brookings Country Club to lead Sioux Falls Washington to a girls’ golf win over Brookings.

50 years ago on April 28, 1972: Oklahoma State graduate and golfer Jim Ahern of Yankton has decided to turn pro.
