REDFIELD – Milbank Area won the team title, while Groton’s Carly Guthmiller earned medalist honors during the Redfield Invitational at Fisher Grove Country Club on Thursday.
It was the first action of the season for most teams, including Aberdeen Roncalli.
The Cavaliers put three players in the top eight in the competition led by Grace Seyer’s sixth place finish overall, which paced Roncalli to a second place showing in the team standings.
Roncalli coach Kerry Brandenburger said the chance to play a full 18-hole round was crucial for the Cavaliers.
“We didn’t have many expectations other than get outside and break some rust off and use this as a practice, more or less,” Brandenburger said. “It was fun to watch the girls get to hit.”
With the region tourney a mere four weeks away and an unseasonably cool forecast looming over the next few days, Thursday’s meet was a good benchmark tournament for a young Cavalier squad.
“Our motto is ‘minimize the damage,’ ” Brandenburger said. “Sometimes we forget that. We hadn’t walked 18 holes since last summer, so it’s not just physical, there’s a mental aspect to it, too. Don’t try to be a hero and punch out when you don’t need to. That’s the big takeaway, is that the girls saw there was room for improvement, but it felt good being outside.”
Seyer’s round of 108 matched teammate Claire Crawford’s 18-hole score, though Seyer was awarded the higher place on a scorecard tiebreaker. Margaret Anderson finished eighth with a round of 109.
Roncalli is slated to head to Milbank on Monday for an already twice-rescheduled meet. The Cavaliers will host the Roncalli Invitational Thursday at Moccasin Creek Country Club.
