Northern hosting Dewey Donat Classic

BY SPORTSCENE STAFF AND PRESS RELEASE

Day one is in the books for the Dewey Donat Classic taking place at Swisher Field.

Friday’s action featured the multis and the hammer throws. When action resumes at 10 this morning that portion of the meet will finish up before the other half of the meet takes place this afternoon.

Northern State decided to name the meet in honor of the late Duane Donat who passed away last August. He was a longtime meet official.

“This is our first annual Dewey Donat Classic and I’m kind of excited to celebrate that in his honor,” said Wolves coach Lynne Dingman. “It should be really cool.”

Donat’s granddaughter Ellen is competing in the meet as a member of the North Dakota State squad.

“Dewey has always been a fixture since day one. It’s strange not having him here. Everybody knows Dewey,” Dingman said. “It’s something special we could do for him and his family. Pretty much all the Donat family is going to be here (Saturday), too. It will be really cool.”

Dingman was pleased with how her athletes competed against a loaded field on Friday.

“Honestly, this is probably one of the premier multis in the region,” she said.
