REDFIELD – It looks to be a busier spring than usual in Redfield this year.

That’s because multiple schools have reached out to see about the prospects of holding meets there.

“Miller’s track which normally hosts a lot of these events, had some sort of surface problem over there,” said Redfield athletic director Joel Osborn.

As a result, several schools have contacted Osborn about having their meets in Redfield.

“Sunshine Bible reached out, Hitchcock-Tulare reached out and asked if we’d be willing to rent our track to them,” Osborn said.

The Sunshine Bible meet scheduled for earlier this week was canceled. The Patriot Invitational, put on by Hitchcock-Tulare, is scheduled to take place today despite the forecast for continued windy conditions.

“It’s protected pretty well with trees and the park down there,” Osborn said of the track location. “Hopefully, they can get after it a little bit.”

Redfield’s track and field squad will be competing at a meet in Huron today, so hosting a meet won’t impact the Pheasants.

Teams scheduled to compete at the Patriot Invitational include Aberdeen Christian, Aberdeen Roncalli, Clark-Willow Lake, Faulkton, Frederick, Groton, Highmore-Harrold, Hitchcock-Tulare, Iroquois-Doland, Lake Preston, Lower Brule, Sunshine Bible and Wolsey-Wessington.

Field events will start at 11:30 a.m. and running events at 12:30 p.m.

Redfield is also scheduled to host the Jimmy Rearick Invitational put on by Wolsey-Wessington on April 29.

“That one does cut into a little bit of our practice time,” Osborn said, “but if for example our meet earlier in that week gets canceled for some season, we told them that yes you can have our track, but we want to come to that meet as well if it works out. In that regard it’s kind of a win-win situation for us.”

Redfield was originally scheduled to host one varsity meet and one middle school meet this year. Osborn said it’s a bit uncommon to host other school’s events, but it has happened before.

“I know we’ve had some other events come here before,” he said, “but I would say it’s probably been since we resurfaced the track 5-6 years ago.”

Osborn said he doesn’t mind helping out other schools and that it’s good for the city.

“We’re happy to have the teams come to town,” Osborn said. “We’re not really charging a whole lot for rent. Just kind of more on the deposit end.”

He knows that the additional meets will have a positive impact on the local economy.

“Our businesses appreciate it,” Osborn said. “We’ve kind of let them know that these meets could be happening on these days, weather permitting of course. They’re appreciative of that as well.”
