Aberdeen Roncalli saved its best for last Monday afternoon at the Northern State Courts.

The Cavaliers lost a pair of tennis duals, but walked off the court with a victory in the final match of the action. Roncalli lost to O’Gorman 9-0 and fell to Brandon Valley 6-3.

The Roncalli doubles tandem of Cason Hellwig and Palmer Johnson recorded a super-tiebreaker victory at number two doubles to cap the day, rallying from a set down on the way to the win.

“It was kind of a mental victory for my two doubles,” said Roncalli coach JD Carrels. “You know you’re playing their number six and number seven seed, but sometimes you can overlook them a little bit. I think that caught them sleeping a little bit there, but power to them, they were kind of mentally able to figure it out, adjust their game.”

Brandon’s Valley number two player was injured earlier in the day, but the Lynx still put up a major fight in the doubles match.

The key for the Cavaliers was staying mentally focused.

“Me and my partner, Palmer, were talking to ourselves and saying that one point at a time, get back in it,” Hellwig said.

Something happened to propel the tandem late in the second set and in the super breaker: the pair got aggressive.

“I was just a little bit more fired up going to the super,” Hellwig said, “and then was able to get to the net more and slam it down.”

Getting to the net is something that neither Hellwig or Johnson is accustomed to doing, according to Carrels.

“They’re definitely two of my players that I kind of struggle with to get to come to the net, but something switched in them and I saw more aggression in this match than I have in practices or any of the previous matches we’ve had so far this season,” Carrels said. “That was great to see, but also I think it was great for them because they could see that as they started getting more aggressive they started winning more points and winning more games. You could just see the confidence in them start definitely showing in their match.”

The Cavaliers’ doubles team trailed 2-0 in the super before scoring seven straight points to take control.

“It’s a massive win, especially going to a super tiebreaker and close games,” Hellwig said, “so definitely get some confidence going into the next match.”

Hellwig also won his singles match.

Roncalli’s other big victory against the Lynx came at number five singles where Landon Zikmund overcame a rough start to win in a super breaker. Zikmund did not manage a single game in the opening set before taking the second and then securing the win in the super at 10-7.

“He had a battle,” Carrels said. “I lost track of how many deuces they played. It was just back and forth, back and forth.”

Carrels said it was encouraging that Zikmund was able to maintain his composure and come back for the win.

“To be able to fight back and get it, and keep that confidence going throughout the super tiebreaker was great,” Carrels said.

The Cavaliers were unable to take a set off O’Gorman to start the day, but Carrels was pleased with what he saw in the setback.

“It was really good for our guys,” he said. “Even though it doesn’t really reflect in a lot of the sores, I think they played some good points.”

Roncalli is scheduled to compete in a triangular in Mitchell today along with Brookings, weather permitting.
