Watertown used three big innings to fuel a doubleheader sweep over the Aberdeen Smittys Thursday night at Fossum Field.

The visitors scored five runs in the first and 10 in the sixth of a 15-1 first game victory. Watertown then plated three runs in the opening frame of a 5-1 win in the nightcap.

“They’re a good team. They had some good ABs in the first game. Their pitchers threw a lot of strikes, kept our guys off balance, mixed their pitches really well,” said Smittys coach Brandon Kusler. “That first game, especially, just shaking off a little bit of rust, first time out here. We saw a lot better things in game two, though, especially offensively.”

Watertown had 10 hits and took advantage of nine Aberdeen walks in the opener. Meanwhile, the Smittys managed just one hit during that game.

Watertown also led from start to finish in the second game, although Aberdeen stayed within striking distance, and finished with more hits.

“I think we had baserunners on in just about every single inning in that second game. Guys in scoring positon as well,” Kusler said. “We’re just kind of missing that big hit, a little bit of situational hitting type things as well.”

The Smittys stranded runners at second and third in the bottom of the sixth. They did plate a run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.

“It’s good to see we’re getting guys on,” Kusler said. “We’re giving ourselves opportunities to score runs, but just kind of missing that big hit.”

Phillip Zens had a pair of hits and Josh Steinwandt had a double for Aberdeen in that contest.

Despite the setbacks, Kusler found things to build on for the upcoming season.

“A lot of positives things, especially from a couple of our pitchers. I thought Brian Holmstrom on in relief in game one, I thought he showed a lot of good things, throwing strikes, mixing his pitches well,” Kusler said. “And then Casey Vining as well in game two. He looked really sharp. He had all of his pitches working. He was able to get a few punch outs there. Those guys will be huge moving forward for us.”
