MADISON – The Aberdeen Roncalli girls’ golf program missed qualifying for the Class A state golf tournament by a single stroke Thursday, but will still be able to compete for a team trophy as three players qualified as individuals at the Region 1A tournament in Madison.

The Cavaliers finished fourth in the event with a team score of 410, just one stroke back of third place Dell Rapids.

While the threesome of Claire Crawford, Grace Seyer and Margaret Anderson will compile a team score at the state event, the one stroke difference means eighth-grader Ava Danielson will not be able to join the field.

“We get to talk about faith a lot,” said Roncalli coach Kerry Brandenberger. “I said, ‘God has a plan. There’s always a reason.’ ”

And while Danielson won’t be pulling out the clubs with the rest of her squad, Brandenberger said the eighth-grader will still be along for the ride.

“We started this year as a team, and we’re going to end as a team,” Brandenberger said. “She’ll get to come with us and see what the state meet is all about.”

Crawford, who has led the way for the Cavaliers throughout the season, did so again on Thursday, finishing eighth in the 38-person field. Seyer and Anderson followed close behind in 11th and 12th, respectively.

“For two eighth-graders and a freshman, they’re just so steady,” Brandenberger said of the top three scorers. “They just let things roll off. Everyone knows my theory, minimize the damage. They’re just so good at that.”

The Class A state tournament is set for June 6-7 at Bakker Crossing in Sioux Falls.

Team Points: Madison 381, Sioux Valley 397, Dell Rapids 409, Aberdeen Roncalli 410, Milbank Area 430, Groton 495. Incomplete: Flandreau, Sisseton, Tri-Valley.
