YANKTON – Aberdeen Central turned in another solid performance against the state’s premier competition, finishing second at the Yankton Invitational golf tournament on Friday. The Golden Eagles shot a 337, just two strokes behind Harrisburg.

The showing came one day after beating primarily the same field in winning the Huron Invitational.

“You never really know what to expect from a young team, but they’re just kind of proving day in and day out what they’re capable of,” said Central coach Kim Zimmerman. “Today wasn’t any different than what they’ve been posting in the past.”

The Eagles were led by Olivia Braun who tied for fourth with an 80, and Emma Dohrer who tied for sixth with an 82. Leah Gough tied for 13th with an 86.

While Central continues to have a stellar spring, Zimmerman said he thinks there is still room for improvement.

“Our girls are really trying to work on their putting. I know a lot of the girls are coming in just talking about they can get better with their putting,” Zimmerman said. “When they say that and they’re still shooting the scores they do – they’re coming in with 34, 35, 36 putts, which we’d like for it to be around 30 – when you look at that, to me that’s kind of an easy thing to correct and get better at that.”

The majority of the girls who are consistently shooting the top scores are seventh and eighth-graders. They are definitely holding their own against much older competition.

“They’re up to the challenge. They’re up the task,” Zimmerman said. “I just think a little bit of that has to be with the tournament golf that they played in as a young kid already.”

The Eagles now have a week off before competing in another large tournament in Mitchell on Friday.

“When you have that type of field and competition, you can really see where you’re game is at and where you matchup team-wise and individually,” Zimmerman said.
