HURON – This was a team title in every sense of the word.

Aberdeen Central had four golfers all within five strokes of each other on the way to capturing the team title at the Huron Invitational on Tuesday. The Golden Eagles were five strokes better than the rest of a loaded field which featured the top teams in the state.

“It was a good confidence builder today, just going out and playing against the competition that we did,” said Central coach Kim Zimmerman. “We beat some really good teams today. The top teams in the state were there in my opinion.”

Central was led by eighth-grader Emma Dohrer who tied for sixth with an 82.

Zimmerman was impressed with her round that was played in wet and cold conditions.

“I’m glad for Emma. She led us today. She really did. She stepped up,” Zimmerman said. “That’s a great round today; 82 for an eighth-grader on a golf course that’s wet.”

Teammates Kyley Wirebaugh and Olivia Braun tied for 13th with 84s, while Leah Gough tied for 16th with an 87.

Add it all together and the Eagles were able to outdistance the field.

Zimmerman said team scores fluctuated throughout the day, but that his golfers came up big when it mattered.

“As it got down towards the end we kind of made some progress. The girls played well down the stretch, good enough to win,” Zimmerman said. “A credit to them to play through the adverse weather conditions and do as well they did; 337 is a really good score today considering the golf course and the weather conditions that they were involved with.”

While the win was impressive considering the competition, the tightness of the team scores showed how even the rest of the season might be as just 11 strokes separated the top six teams during the tournament.

“I told the girls you can put all those top six teams probably in a hat and pull them out, and on any given day, pull one out and there’s your winner,” Zimmerman said. “It’s going to be that tight day in and day out for the most part.”

Central is right back in action this morning competing in a tournament in Yankton.
