PIERRE – Aberdeen Central saved its best round yet, for its biggest meet so far.

The Golden Eagles shot a season-low 315 on the way to winning the team championship at the Eastern South Dakota Conference Golf Tournament Tuesday at Hillsview Golf Course. Central had all six girls shoot under 90 on the day.

“I can’t say enough good things about the how the girls went out today,” said Central coach Kim Zimmerman. “It was just an outstanding day.”

Olivia Braun was medalist with a 74 to lead three Eagles in the top 10. Leah Gough was sixth with an 80, and Emma Dohrer was eighth with an 80.

Kyley Wirebaugh was 11th with an 81, while Hayley Wirebaugh shot an 85, and Morgan Jones had an 89.

Central has continued to improve and lower its season-best total each of the past few weeks. Even as the squad has won tournament after tournament, Zimmerman has said the team had room for improvement.

“This is what I’m talking about. How much better can you get? There’s always room for improvement out there and I think today was evident of that with the team score that they shot,” Zimmerman said. “From top to bottom, it was just an outstanding performance from all the girls.”

Zimmerman couldn’t put his finger on one thing that helped to produce the season-low total.

“I don’t know if it was one particular thing. They hit a lot of quality shots down the stretch,” he said. “They put together some really good holes when they needed it the most.”

The Eagles are definitely trending in the right direction as the season is winding to a close.

“Our game is coming together right now and that’s what you want. I said a goal at the beginning of the year is to improve. Well, we’re doing that,” Zimmerman said. “We’re accomplishing that and we’re doing it in kind of the post season.”

Central has just one event left before the state tournament. The Eagles will head to Brandon on Tuesday for a tournament that will feature a modified format in a more relaxed setting.

“That could be just what we need though right now. It might be a little tune-up before state,” Zimmerman said. “We need a meet right now where you just kind of go out and play golf stress-free.”

Central won ESD titles in 2017 and 2018 and finished third last year. Those squads featured older girls compared to this year’s team which features a seventh-grader and a pair of eighth-graders.

“You know these guys are probably going to be pretty good down the road,” Zimmerman said, “but this happened a lot more quickly than I had anticipated.”
