MITCHELL – The Aberdeen Central youth movement continues to shine.

The Golden Eagles, once again led by a group of seventh and eighth-graders, captured the team championship at the Mitchell Invitational on Friday.

“Everybody was there and for us to come out on top was very gratifying,” said Central coach Kim Zimmerman of the loaded field. “You can’t say enough how these girls, especially with the youth of them, have really kind of come through when we needed them. It’s just another confidence builder for us.”

Central shot a total of 345 to win the title by a single stroke. While that total is not close to a season low, Zimmerman said the scores were elevated for everyone.

“We played a big, long golf course today,” Zimmerman said. “The greens were picking up speed, so you put those two things together, it’s going to be a little more challenging for these girls.”

The Central girls were up to that challenge, getting stronger as the day wore on and ending up winning yet another big tourney.

Zimmerman said the key is to focus on the task at hand.

“Stay in the moment. That’s a big thing in golf. Stay in the moment,” Zimmerman said. “Don’t worry about the past and don’t think ahead, just kind of stay with your next shot.”

Central was led by eighth-grader Olivia Braun who finished sixth with an 80, and seventh-grader Kyley Wirebaugh who was eighth with an 83.

“One of our unsung heroes so far has been Kyley Wirebaugh. She’s a seventh-grader. For her to play this big golf course today as a seventh grader, that’s pretty impressive,” Zimmerman said. “She’s just been really steady for us lately. You don’t expect that from somebody of her grade level, but she stepped it up.”

Eighth-grader Emma Dohrer was 18th with an 89.

The Eagles will compete at a tourney in Watertown on Tuesday. Zimmerman expects a much different results when it comes to scoring.

“It’s just kind of the opposite type of golf course than we played today,” he said. “A lot shorter, a lot more golfer-friendly.”
