HURON – Aberdeen Central closed out its regular season tennis scheduled with a pair of victories in its three matches during the Huron Quadrangular on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles blanked Brookings 9-0, fell to Yankton 8-1 and doubled up Huron 6-3.

The teams were battling for victories to help their seeding for Tuesday’s Eastern South Dakota Conference tournament in Huron.

“Our goal was 2-1 at every flight and see if we could sneak into any 3-0s,” said Central coach Trent Kurtz. “We had one 3-0 at flight two doubles. They got a big win against Yankton.”

That flight two doubles team is comprised of Mitchell Hofer and AJ Prehn.

The duo pulled out a 10-7 win over Yankton and then rallied for a tiebreaker win over Huron.

“Two dubs win over Yankton has to be the highlight,” Kurtz said. “They played really well, but then on the flip side, they came out and were really flat against Huron and were not playing well, and got down on themselves.”

Hofer and Prehn trailed 9-6 and 40-15 before saving three match points, winning three straight games and then pulling out a 7-3 win in the breaker.

“That’s a big step for them, because when they’ve played poorly in the past, they haven’t found ways to win,” Kurtz said. “So this one, they didn’t play their best tennis and they still found a way to win. Kind of the sign of a good team, so hopefully that’s kind of a hurdle they cleared that going forward they can be a little more consistent.”

Central will now compete in the ESD before moving on to the State AA tournament in Rapid City May 19-20.

Kurtz said the one day conference tourney is something he enjoys.

“My favorite day of the year. Of all the sports I coach, Friday night at the state basketball tournament is pretty fun, but ESD just as one day, it’s probably my favorite coaching day of the year,” Kurtz said. “That’s a fun one. We always look forward to that.”
