Big innings fuel Smittys in sweep over Lake Norden

The Aberdeen Smittys used a handful of big-run innings to claim a doubleheader sweep of Lake Norden Saturday afternoon at Fossum Field. Aberdeen won both games in five-inning fashion, winning the first 10-0 and the second 13-3.

After needing extra innings to walk off Lake Norden in the first meeting between the two teams earlier this season, Aberdeen needed no such thing on Saturday, pulling away from a 2-0 lead after three innings in game one, plating five in the bottom of the fourth and three in the fifth to close out the victory.

“A lot different from the first (meeting) for sure,” said Smittys head coach Brandon Kusler. “There were a lot of great things to take away from today.”

Drew Salfrank, Brock Martin and Phillip Zens all had two hits for the Smittys in the opener. Salfrank and Andrew Woehl each drove in three runs, while Martin finished with two RBIs.

“We put together a lot of great at bats and found holes when we needed to,” Kusler said. “We had a lot of great situational hitting from top to bottom. I also thought we ran the bases extremely well all day and applied a lot of pressure to their defense.”

Smittys starter Brian Holmstrom gave up just three hits and a pair of walks in a complete-game outing, notching the shutout. Holmstrom also struck out six en route to the win.

“Holmstrom gave us another great start,” Kusler said. “He commanded all his pitches well and kept hitters off balance all day. Very impressed by his performance.”

Aberdeen’s offensive outburst continued through the onset of game two, as the Smittys scored 10 runs in the first three innings of play and closed out the day with another three runs in the bottom of the fifth.

The Smittys scored the 13 runs despite managing just six hits in the game. Aberdeen also earned 11 walks and took advantage of three Lake Norden errors.

Josh Steinwandt had two of those six hits and also drove in a pair of runs.

Fresh off his productive plate appearances in game one, Salfrank took the mound in game two and tossed a single inning for the Smittys, allowing a pair of runs, but exited the game with the lead. Casey Vining took over the next three innings, giving up one run, while Zens closed out the victory with a scoreless frame.

“There’s a few things we need to clean up on the mound, falling behind in counts and giving them free bases,” Kusler said. “Beyond that, our offense continued to produce, and it was an all-around team effort to get a couple wins.”

Aberdeen heads to Watertown Thursday for a single game and will play at Sioux Falls West the following Tuesday.
