The Aberdeen Smittys made sure there would be no comeback this time.

After a twinbill split with Spearfish on Saturday, one in which the visitors rallied for a late-inning win, the Smittys built on an early lead and eventually produced a 12-2 American Legion baseball victory on Sunday afternoon at Fossum Field.

“I’m really proud of the way the guys came to the yard and took care of business after a tough loss (Saturday),” said Smittys coach Brandon Kusler. “We got back to being more aggressive offensively, and we’re hoping that continues into some big games for us this coming week.”

After giving up a run in the top of the first inning, Aberdeen responded with three runs in the bottom half of the frame. Jaiden Smith plated two runs on a double and Ethan Kjenstad delivered an RBI single.

Clinging to a 3-2 lead in the fourth, the Smittys broke the game open with one run in the fourth, five in the fifth and ended the game with three more in the sixth.

Drew Salfrank had an RBI single, before Phillip Zens and Brock Martin drove in runs on back-to-back bases-loaded walks to highlight the fifth-inning uprising. The hosts invoked the 10-run rule in the sixth when Salfrank drove in another run with a double and Martin plated another with a single.

Martin and Kjenstad each finished with three hits, while Zens and Salfrank each had a pair. Martin drove in three runs, and Smith and Salfrank each knocked in two.

The Smittys now have their full complement of players following the conclusion of the spring sports season.

“It feels really good to finally have all of our guys,” Kusler said. “A few of them got back from state track (Saturday) night and were thrown right into the fire today.”

One of those was Salfrank, who medaled four times at the state track meet and was the Smittys starting pitcher on Sunday.

“Drew Salfrank gave us a great start on the mound, and I’m proud of the way he competed despite just getting back from a long, hot weekend at the state track meet. He was able to give us the start we needed and threw four solid innings. Nick Clemens looked really sharp in relief, as well.”

The Smittys play at Sioux Falls West in a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday, and then head to Huron for a twinbill on Saturday.
