Jonny Carter paid attention to the track conditions and when his opportunity came he was ready for it Friday night at Brown County Speedway.
The Fairmont, N.D., driver took advantage of a restart midway through the Street Stock feature, found a groove to his liking and worked his way to victory during the Street Stock Tour Series.
Carter was in third place when a yellow flag bunched up the field. While most of the drivers were hooking up on the high side of the track, Carter noticed something between turns one and two.
“It was kind of the benefactor of being in third. You could search around a little bit,” Carter said. “I kind of saw they moved the barrels in a little bit and I figured there was a little traction there.”
When racing resumed, Carter challenged race leader Ty Agen of Chippewa Falls, Wis., sliding underneath him between turns one and two for a brief lead before Agen would regain the advantage up high on turns three and four.
On Carter’s third slide attempt, Agen lost control, bringing out another yellow and putting Carter up front for a lead he never lost.
“Young Ty, he’s 16-years-old, I mean he wheels his butt off, man,” Carter said. “I figured maybe if we could throw a couple sliders at him, get him rattled, he’s never been here before.”
Once Carter had the lead, he repeatedly went low into one and two and came out high off turns three and four on his way to the checkered flag.
“It was definitely better in one and two on the bottom. You could kind of carry your momentum and slide across,” he said. “Three and four, there was a big cushion up there. You just kind of had to ride that out.”
Carter, who used to race out of Lisbon, N.D., knows he was fortunate to get that mid-race yellow flag.
“The yellow definitely helped,” Carter said. “(Agen) was in a zone there before that yellow. The yellow changes everything, man. I’ve been there.”
Carter will now try to add more feature wins on the tour in Jamestown, N.D., tonight and in Lisbon on Sunday.
He was definitely happy with his victory Friday night.
“These tour races are hard to come by,” Carter said. “Anytime we can win one, it’s big.”
Kent Arment of Aberdeen was a double feature winner on the evening, taking both the Modified and Late Model mains.
Warner’s Trevor Nelson won the Super Stock feature, and Scott Hansen of Garden City won the Midwest Mods.
Racing continues at 7 p.m. Friday.
