A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of June 12-18:

Last year on June 14, 2021: Former Aberdeen resident Michael Andrew qualified for his first Olympic team. Andrew won the 100-meter breaststroke at the Team USA Swim Trials in Omaha, Neb.

10 years ago on June 12, 2012: Ben Leber of Vermillion retired as an NFL linebacker after his 498 total tackles, 24 sacks and five interceptions in 10 seasons.

20 years ago on June 12, 2002: The Wyoming all-star boys’ basketball team defeated the South Dakota all-stars 101-89. Matt Hammer of Elkton led SD with 29 points; Hammer will play basketball at Northern State this fall.

30 years ago on June 13-14, 1992: Jason Thorstenson of Aberdeen won the calf roping title of the South Dakota High School Eastern Regional Rodeo.

40 years ago on June 12, 1982: At the State AAU Track Meet in Pierre, Mark Logan of Agar won four events (100- and 300-meter hurdles, long jump, triple jump) in the boys’ 17-18 division while Sheila Groft of Redfield won the girls’ 17-18 100- and 300-meter hurdles.

50 years ago on June 18, 1972: One of the leading jockeys again this year on the Nebraska horse racing circuit is Fred Ecoffey of Pine Ridge. When he retired in 1984, Ecoffey had started 17,522 races, winning 2,683 of them. Starting in 1957, Ecoffey rode horses to more than $10 million in winnings.
