A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of June 26-July 2:
Last year on June 30, 2021: Two long-time Eastern South Dakota Conference athletic directors are retiring after 23 years on the job. Randy Marso of Brandon Valley taught and coached for 11 years at Brandon Valley before becoming the school’s AD in 1998. That same year in 1998 Gene Brownell took over as AD at Aberdeen Central. Before that, he was a teacher and coach at the school for 21 years. And before that, Brownell, a NSU graduate, taught and coached at Tulare, Herreid and Kimball.
10 years ago on June 24, 2012: In his last two outings in Sunshine League amateur baseball games for Alexandria, former South Dakota State pitcher Trever Vermeulen was one out away from back-to-back perfect games. He got two wins, threw one no-hitter, gave up only one hit and one walk and struck out 32 in the two games.
20 years ago on June 28, 2002: Despite starting in the back of the pack in the feature, Kent Arment of Aberdeen won his fifth Modified feature in a row at his home track of Brown County Speedway.
30 years ago on June 27, 1992: Dan Stier of Aberdeen finished second in the three-day In-Fishwerman Professional Walleye Trail Tournament in Devils Lake, ND. Stier caught 50.02 pounds of fish while winner Harry Stiles of Stillwater, MN, caught 58.64 pounds.
40 years ago on June 26, 1982: Brad Beattie of Aberdeen Pepsi hit five singles in five appearances at the plate in the South Dakota Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame game in Madison. His effort led the SD Amateur All-Stars to a 6-0 win over defending state champion Madison.
50 years ago on June 27, 1972: Dave Hanten of Huron won the Central South Dakota Golf Tournament in Huron by shooting a one-under 71. Steve Bell of Aberdeen was second with a 73 while Dick Tschetter of Sioux Falls was third with a 74.
