Trio of South Dakota coaches win national awards

SIOUX FALLS – The National High School Athletic Coaches Association has named the 2022 NHSACA Coach of the Year Winners. To be considered for this award a nominee has been determined to have outstanding coaching longevity and win-loss record, championship years, awards received and service to the coaching profession and to the athletes of the State of South Dakota.

The 2022 Coach of the Year winners from South Dakota were Bill Weber of Watertown High School, Coach of the Year in Assistant -Boys’ Sports; Kurt Schultz of Baltic High School, Coach of the Year in Boys’ Cross Country; and Paul Hendry of Rapid City Stevens High School, Coach of the Year in Girls’ Track and Field.

They were honored at the National Awards Banquet held at the NHSACA 53rd Annual Conference in Altoona, IA on Wednesday. This annual event is attended by athletic directors and coaches in 19 sports from throughout the United States.

Other finalists from South Dakota were: Scott Embry of Sioux Falls Lincoln High School in the sport of Assistant Girls’, Randy Marso of Brandon Valley High School in Athletic Director, Bill Martens of Aberdeen Central High School in the sport of Girls Cross Country, Jeff Halseth of Sioux Falls Lincoln High School in the sport of Golf, Ryan Beier, Sioux Falls O’Gorman High School in the sport of Soccer, Maridee Dossett of Madison High School in the sport of Special Sports (Gymnastics), Pat Moller of Mitchell High School in the sport of Tennis, and Misty Larson of Chester High School in the sport of Boys’ Track and Field.

Also inducted into the 2022 NHSACA Hall of Fame were David Dolan of Rapid City and Jim Dorman of Sioux Falls. Dave Dolan was also selected as the Dwight T Keith Award recipient (highest national award that NHSACA presents) and Bill Weber of Watertown was the Carey E McDonald Citation winner.
