Looking Back

A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of July 3-9:

Last year on July 7, 2021: Dell Rapids St. Mary is the only high school in state history with three 2,000-point plus career boys’ scorers. The school got its three former basketball stars together for a picture as part of a story on the three for the school’s alumni newsletter. The three are: Connor Libis (2021 graduate with 2,731 career points); current St. Mary coach Colby Fitzgerald (2004 graduate with 2,294 points); and Jerry Even (1964 graduate with 2,038 points).

10 years ago on July 7, 2012: July 7: Three members of a Mitchell drag racing family each recently pulled off a rarity within two weeks of each other.

A perfect reaction time is .000 on the computer-generated stats that are produced after each race. So that means a driver would take off at the exact moment the Christmas tree lights that start a drag race turn green. The odds of doing so are 1 in 3,458, according to the National Hot Rod Association.

The father of the Mohr Family Racing Team, Dan, scored his perfect triple zero light June 23 at Oahe Speedway in Pierre. His son, Austin, accomplished the feat in the (age) 15 Junior Dragster division June 30 at the Western Conference Junior Finals at Bandimere Speedway in Morrison, Colo. Then 8-year-old Chelsey, daughter of Dan and sister to Austin, did it in the Junior Minor Shootout July 7 at Oahe Speedway — in just her fourth drag race ever.

20 years ago on July 8-9, 2002: The Rapid City Central football camp will feature Aberdeen native Josh Heupel, who is with the Green Bay Packers. The Rapid City camp is being run by RC Central coach Steve Svendsen, who was Heupel’s coach at Aberdeen Central.

30 years ago on July 9, 1992: Doug Schaffer used his arm and his bat to help the Redfield Legion team to win a doubleheader over Faulkton-Cresbard. The final score of both games was 5-2.

40 years ago on July 8, 1982: The Selby amateur baseball team clinched a share of the North Central States league title with a 10-0 win over Eureka. Dan Biel struck out eight while Knute Reierson had a three-RBI double for the winners.

50 years ago on July 4, 1972: A special Tuesday night show at Brown County Raceway included a fireworks show, and race officials had to turn away fans from getting into the packed show. Jim Rawden of Aberdeen won the hobby stock feature and Roger Swenson of Watertown won the Late Model Sportsman feature.
