A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of July 24-30:

Last year on July 29, 2021: Cleveland manager Terry Francona, born in Aberdeen on April 22, 1959, will miss the rest of the MLB season due to a staph infection in his left foot. Francona, 62, has managed Cleveland for nine seasons with more than 700 wins, three American League Central titles and one American League pennant.

10 years ago on July 26, 2012: Spearfish Post 164 defeated Post 22 14-11 for the Rapid City’s first lost in the Region 3A Tournament since 2004.

20 years ago on July 26, 2002: Former 1980s Northern State wrestling two-time national
champion Dave Harvey was inducted into the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Hall of Fame.

30 years ago on July 28, 1992: Doland native Dennis Koslowski won the silver medal at 220 pounds in Greco-Roman wrestling at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

40 years ago on July 24, 1982: Two Redfield teens are preparing for the AAU National Junior Olympics in Memphis, TN. At a regional meet in Wyoming, Julie Frost qualified in the long jump, high jump and 100-meter dash while Sheila Groft qualified in the high jump. Roberta Schumacher is the girls’ coach.

50 years ago on July 29, 1972: Warren Reeves of Aberdeen won a state championship at the South Dakota State Trapshooting Championships at the Brown County Sportsman’s Club Range. At his home range south of Aberdeen, Reeves won the Class D 220 target singles state championship.
