A total of four area coaches have been nominated for NHSACA (National High School Athletic Coaches Association) National Coach of the Year awards in their respective sports.

The list on nominees includes Derek Larson of Aberdeen Roncalli for girls’ basketball, Merle Aske of Aberdeen Central for soccer, Todd Thorson of Ipswich for girls’ cross country, and Tom McGough of Miller for boys’ cross country.

Other nominees are Jeff VanLeur of Bridgewater-Emery-Ethan for football, Bill Vincent of Sioux Valley for boys’ basketball, Ronette Costain of Harrisburg for volleyball, John Donovan of Chamberlain for wrestling, Royce Wuertzer of St. Thomas More for boys’ track and field, Troy Sturgeon of Brandon Valley for girls’ track and field, Kirk Hogen of Vermillion for golf, Don Barnes of O’Gorman for tennis, Marla Tegethoff of Platte-Geddes for cheer (special sports), Joey Struwe of Sioux Falls Lincoln for athletic director, Russ Bailey of Custer for assistant boys’ sports, and Cindee Mutchelknaus of Menno for assistant girls’ sports.
