The Brookings Cubs returned from a two-hour weather delay to score seven runs in the eighth inning to secure a 13-6 win over the Yankton Tappers in the opening round of the State A Amateur Baseball Tournament at Fossum Field Friday night.

Brookings led the contest 6-4 and had two men on in the bottom of the eighth when rain forced a lengthy stoppage of play. When action resumed, the Cubs produced seven runs to take control.

Jeff Fish had a two-run single, and Sam McMacken a bases-loaded double to highlight the frame.

Brookings wiped out an early deficit with five runs in the second inning, all coming with two outs. Austin Koenig had a two-run single, before Jared Tschetter delivered a two-run double, and Jackson Krogman drove in another run with a single.

Yankton clawed back with a run in the third and two more in the seventh to close the deficit to two, before Brookings pulled away.

Justin Cawfell had three hits and scored three times for the Cubs, McMacken finished with two hits and knocked in three, and Tschetter had two hits and two RBI.
