Brookings rallies to eliminate Circus at state tourney

MITCHELL – The Brookings Cubs scored five runs over the final three innings to defeat Aberdeen Circus Sports Bar 8-4 during an elimination game at the State A Amateur Baseball Tournament at Drake Field on Friday afternoon.

Circus had overcome a 3-0 deficit with four unanswered runs only to have the Cubs take control in the final frames.

Brandon Kusler’s two-run double in the fourth inning closed the gap to 3-2 and Aberdeen tied the contest when Ryan Ellingson drove in Dalton Cox with a single in the fifth.

Aberdeen took the lead in the sixth inning, scoring on a passed ball, but ended up stranding runners on second and third.

Brookings then took the lead for good on a two-run home run by Chase McDaniel in the seventh inning. The Cubs added an insurance run on a error in the top of the eighth, before McDaniel hit another two-run homer in the ninth for the final margin of difference. Brookings had four total home runs in the contest.

McDaniel finished with three hits and drove in four.

Kusler had three hits and knocked in a pair for Circus. Michael Babcock and Ryan Ellingson each had two hits.
