SIOUX FALLS – The Aberdeen Central girls’ tennis team rounded out its two-day stay at the Sioux Falls Invitational with a pair of wins on Saturday, knocking off Sioux Falls Roosevelt 9-0 and closing out the weekend with a 7-2 win over Sioux Falls Lincoln.
The two wins gave Central four victories in five matches over the course of the two days.
“It’s a very good weekend,” said Central coach John Vogel. “We’re pleased. When we go back to (the O’Gorman match), there’s room for improvement, but overall a very good weekend.”
Vogel said Saturday’s play started somewhat sluggishly. Roosevelt lost its top four players from a year ago to graduation and its No. 5 player didn’t return to the team.
“When you lose your top five players in a sport that plays six, you’re going to struggle,” Vogel said. “And Roosevelt was struggling.”
Still, Vogel said, his girls were able to maintain focus and bounce back for the victory over Lincoln.
“That was a big win,” Vogel said. “We’ve never beaten Lincoln, at least during my time here.”
Central’s lone two losses in that match came at No. 4 singles and No. 1 doubles, though both were tightly contested matches.
“Everything was clicking,” Vogel said. “They were all close scores. It was a lot of fun.”
After experimenting with the third-flight doubles combinations through much of the early going this season, including using three different teams Friday, Vogel paired Laney Gonsor and Reese Comstock for both of Saturday’s matches.
It’s a combination that will likely be given a hard look going forward.
“We’re a deep and balanced team, so we were trying a bunch of people,” Vogel said. “(Friday) they looked good and they did again (Saturday). They just played really good together. … Not discounting anyone else we tried, they just have good chemistry together.”
Central will have five days off before returning to play next weekend for another five-match weekend at the Brookings Jamboree.
