Golden Eagles come up short against Brookings

BROOKINGS – The Aberdeen Central boys’ soccer team dropped a heartbreaker Saturday afternoon, falling 1-0 to Brookings after the Bobcats scored the game-winning goal in the 74th minute of play.

The loss marked Central’s first loss of the season. The Golden Eagles are now 2-1-1 overall and have not scored in their last two games.

“I thought the first half we struggled with how to create chances,” said Central coach Lance Mohr. “In the second half, I thought we settled into the game a little bit, but we were just missing that final piece of getting that goal.”

Brookings junior Rylan Eide was credited with the Bobcat goal, which proved to be the game-winning tally.

While the overall result wasn’t what the Golden Eagles were hoping for coming off a scoreless draw against Sioux Falls Jefferson at home last Tuesday, Mohr did like some things he saw from his team on the pitch.

“I thought we defended pretty well most of the game,” he said.

Brookings is now 2-2 overall with three of its four games being decided by one goal.

“They’ve played everyone tough,” Mohr said. “It wasn’t like we drastically underperformed.”

Central remains on the road Tuesday, taking on Pierre in another Eastern South Dakota Conference road contest.

“We’ll need to recover and rest, and get right back at it,” Mohr said.
