PIERRE – The Aberdeen Central girls’ soccer team overcame the elements on Tuesday afternoon to remain undefeated on the season.

The Golden Eagles set the tone early, changed strategy as the game wore on, and recorded a 5-1 win over Pierre.

“It was 95 degrees playing on a large field,” said Central coach Merle Aske. “We had to play everyone we had on the bench.”

Aske noted that the field in Pierre measures 120 by 80, one of the largest in the state.

“The first 20 minutes we tried to make it a track meet and we were wearing ourselves out,” he said. “At water break we talked about slowing down, possessing to the offensive half, then attacking the goal. The girls adjusted.”

As a result, it impacted the game in two ways.

“We made Pierre chase, which limited their chances,” Aske said, “and gave us better looks at goal.”

The Eagles got off to a quick start when Deshani Peters scored on a corner kick just two minutes into the game. Peters connected on another corner in the 33rd minute to give Central a 2-0 halftime lead.

“Deshani came up huge,” Aske said. “She put two corner kicks in from the kick.”

Abby Witte scored on assist from Peters to start the second half, Makylie Miller added a goal in the 52nd minute, and Peters scored again on an assist from Miller in the 68th minute.

Aske noted that the Eagles were solid all over the field during the contest.

“Kaylin Poppen and Mayklie Miller had great games controlling the middle of the field,” Aske said. “Alana Hansen and Madison Hochstetter had great games in back limiting Pierre shots and starting the attack.”

Central, 4-0-1 on the season, hosts Huron at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Brownell Activities Complex.
