PIERRE – The cross country season got off to a soggy start in Pierre on Friday. Runners endured a rain delay and a rough course during the Pierre Invitational.

Dannika Kaup of Potter County won the girls’ race, while Madisyn Gellhaus of Ipswich was fourth, and Juna Ramey of Aberdeen Central was fifth to lead four Golden Eagles among the top 10 runners.

Central’s Kiana Joerger was sixth, Morgan VanVeen ninth, and Anneliese Wells 10th.

“It was good to get in the first meet,” said Central girls’ coach Bill Martens. “It was really a muddy course after an hour of rain delay. I thought we handled the weather conditions pretty well.”

Potter County’s Emma Schlachter was seventh and teammate Jadyn Ahlehmeier eighth.

Jared Lutmer of Pierre won the boys’ race. Nicholas Schlachter of Potter County was sixth, while Aberdeen Central’s Christian Wells and Rylan Johnson finished eighth and ninth, respectively.

“We had a good day for as young as we are,” said Central boys’ coach Greg Murley. “Beginning the season with an hour rain delay and muddy course provides an opportunity to see how the kids handle adversity.”

Murley said the race showed a few areas that the Golden Eagles can work on.

“We will need to get better at race positioning and getting out harder at the beginning of the race,” Murley said. “We will continue to get better and we look forward to seeing where the progress takes us.”

Central will compete at the Augustana Twi-light Meet Friday in Sioux Falls.
