MITCHELL – The Mount Vernon Mustangs scored on a two-out single in the bottom of the eighth inning to slip past the Milbank Firechiefs 3-2 during the second round of State B Amateur Baseball Tournament Sunday night at Cadwell Park.

Chase Hetland placed a single into rightfield scoring Koby Larson in the last of the eighth for the game-winner.

The contest was tight the whole way as Dom Boerger of Milbank and Luke Tiesler of Mount Vernon both pitched complete games.

Boerger, who struck out 20 batters on Thursday, recorded 17 strikeouts against the Mustangs. He struck out the side four times and fanned nine batters in a row at one stage. Tiesler allowed just four hits and did not give up a run in eight of the nine innings.

Mount Vernon got on the board on Eric Giblin’s single in the bottom of the first inning.

The Firechiefs took a brief lead in the top of the third with a pair of runs. Travis Lester produced one run on a bases-loaded walk before Kaden Krause had an RBI single.

The Mustangs answered back with a run in the bottom half of the third when Spencer Neuegbauer tripled and came home on a single by Hetland.

Neugebauer and Hetland each finished with two hits. Hetland also drove in a pair.
