It was an historic night at Brownell Activities Complex Thursday as Mount Marty won the first football game in its program history with a victory over Presentation College.
The Lancers, a second-year program, got off to a quick start on the way to a 42-10 non-conference victory.
“They’re a good team,” said PC coach Steve Heimann of the Lancers. “Their record last year doesn’t reflect who they are.”
The visitors wasted no time taking control of the game with back-to-back touchdowns in the opening quarter. The Saints got on the board with a 52-yard-field goal by Luis Ferreiro in the middle of the second period, but did not score again until the final five minutes of the contest.
By then, the Lancers had reeled off 29 unanswered points, most of the big play variety. Ka’Ua Nishigaya scored on a 52-yard run, and Jonah Miyazawa caught a pair of scoring strikes from Ken Gay, one for 50 yards and another for 56 yards.
It was tough night for the PC defense, but Heimann said Mount Marty had something to do with that.
“They’re a big team, physically a big team. It wore our defense down a little bit,” Heimann said. “We saw some cramping and things like that, but we’ve got to get some more production on the offensive side of the ball and get those guys off the field.”
The Saints’ lone touchdown came on a short run by Daryl Coston with 4:24 remaining. That was set up by a 42-yard pass from Kaeden Frazier to Cameron Sheppard.
However, PC had a difficult time sustaining drives throughout the contest without much of a running game.
“We really struggled with that,” Heimann said. “We’ve got some newer guys on the O-line and are kind of working through some of those kinks, but again they’re a big team.”
Ferreiro also had a few solid punts in the contest in addition to his kicking duties.

“Overall, until later in the game, special teams actually played pretty well,” Heimann said. “I’m pretty happy with that phase, of course you can always improve.”
The Saints take to the road for their next game, playing at Luther on Saturday, Sept. 3.
While the opener is not what the Saints had in mind, it is just one game in a long season.
“That’s what I just told the team. It’s 1/11th of the season and not to let a game like this define us, and move forward,” Heimann said. “We are a better football team than this and we’ll see that in the future.”
