FAULKTON – Runners battled stiff competition, a difficult course and some challenging conditions during the Lakeside Invitational cross country meet Wednesday at Lakeside Country Club in Faulkton.

Ella Boekelheide of Northwestern won the girls’ race with Dannika Kaup of Potter County second. Pierce Baumberger of Miller won the boys’ race with teammate Alex Schumacher runner-up.

Potter County won the girls’ team title, while Miller edged Northwestern by two points to win the boys’ team championship.

The meet was full of returning state-place winners in both races.

“This Faulkton meet usually is a good one,” said Aberdeen Roncalli coach Brady Lesnar. “It’s a tough course, too. They’ve got a hill, it’s brutal, and the wind was hitting them too as they were going up. It was a climb.”

The Cavaliers were led by seventh-grader Addison Cassady on the girls’ side. She finished 14th overall against some of the state’s top runners.

“For her to be 14th in that mix was good to see,” Lesnar said.

Paul Gutenkauf topped the Roncalli boys, also with a 14th place finish. Garrett Griffin finished 22nd.

The Cavaliers are in the midst of a busy part of their season. They ran last Thursday and Saturday, and have upcoming meets on Saturday and Monday.

Lesnar said he isn’t too concerned about the demanding schedule at this point in the year.

“We’re still in the training part of the season,” he said. “Experience is a good way to train.”

Roncalli will get to experience something new on Saturday when they head to a meet in Grand Forks, N.D. The Cavaliers were planning to compete in a meet in Milaca, Minn., but that meet got canceled.

Grand Forks decided to host a meet and are calling it a border battle with teams from North Dakota, Minnesota and Canada scheduled to attend. Roncalli and Milbank Area are the only two squads from South Dakota who will be competing.

“I’m really excited about it. I got a course map. It looks really cool,” Lesnar said. “It looks like it’s very spectator friendly. It also looks like it’s in a wooded park, so you kind of get the real cross country feel there.”
