SIOUX FALLS – The Aberdeen Central boys used a balanced finish to claim the 10th place spot in team points Friday at the Augustana Twilight cross country meet.

The Golden Eagles were led by Christian Wells in 67th, followed closely by Rylan Johnson in 76th, Tino Lopez in 84th, and Sam Schultz in 87th at the prestigious meet which featured more than 200 runners in both the high school boys’ and girls’ races.

“Considering the caliber of competition, I thought we had a good day,” said Central boys’ coach Greg Murley. “We transitioned from running to racing, which I was pleased to see. We talked about getting out at the beginning of the race and I thought we did that well.”

Milbank Area finished 20th in the boys’ team points led by Payton Brown who was 37th and James Batchelor who was 43rd.

The Central girls finished 12th in points, one spot in front of Milbank Area.

The Eagles were led by Annaliese Wells who took 70th. Morgan VanVeen was close behind in 78th and Kiana Joerger was 84th.

“It was good to compete in a large meet,” said Central girls’ coach Bill Martens. “It was good experience for us. I thought we had a strong team effort.”

Milbank Area’s Ashlynn Batchelor finished 13th overall.

The meet also featured a college division and Central was well represented.

“The atmosphere is incredible and it is always fun to see our alumni racing for their college teams,” Murley said, “Zach Johnson for Concordia of Nebraska, Daniel Street for Augustana, Jackson Harrison, Josh Martin and Jacob Angerhofer for NSU.”

Central will host the annual Al Sahli-Bob Salmi meet Thursday at Lee Park Golf Course.
