Aberdeen Central swept its matches, while Aberdeen Roncalli dropped a pair on the final day of the Elliott Extravaganza Saturday.
The Golden Eagles were 5-4 winners over Pierre before capping the weekend with an 8-1 win over Roncalli. The Cavaliers, meanwhile, fell 9-0 to Watertown earlier in the day before facing Central in the two teams’ lone meeting of the season.
“I was so glad it didn’t rain,” said Central coach John Vogel, who admitted to losing sleep over what had been an inclement forecast earlier in the week. “We had great weather. It wasn’t windy, it wasn’t hot. So it ended up being a great day.”
Central began its day with a narrow victory over Pierre. The Golden Eagles welcomed senior Emily Ringgenberg back to the lineup in that match after missing the last three weeks with a wrist injury.
Ringgenberg’s return, Vogel said, seemed to put an extra bit of pep in the team’s day.
After winning both of her matches against Pierre, Ringgenberg did not play singles against Roncalli, citing lingering soreness and leaving the match to Reese Comstock.
Ringgenberg did play doubles, however, teaming up with partner Alice Vogel for a second doubles win on the day.
“It’s a really fun tournament,” Alice Vogel said. “I really enjoy getting to play all the schools, especially getting to play against Roncalli. … But I also enjoy getting to play all the other schools and playing at home.”
“It is nice to play at home with other people around,” John Vogel said. “We get six other teams to come in, so it does make it special. We didn’t have huge crowds or anything, but it’s still nice to see activity all over the courts.”
Central snared just one other singles victory in the Pierre match and needed all three doubles victories to secure the team win. The Golden Eagles got them by the narrowest of margins, including a tie-breaker win at No. 3 doubles.
“I think when we see Pierre again, they’ll be well-rested,” Vogel noted.
Roncalli’s lone win of the day came at No. 5 singles against Central, as Keira Rivett claimed a 6-4, 6-4 win over Ema Rehder.

“We’ve been playing a lot of Class AA schools,” said Roncalli coach Jason Haskell. “This is our AA stretch of the season, and it feels like we’ve been getting pounded a little bit. But we’ll come out of that and play Milbank and Sioux Falls and get back into A schools next week.”
Haskell said this latest stretch of tough opponents will hopefully serve his team well down the stretch.
“Every match is a learning opportunity,” he said. “We saw some things today that we can work on and get back to it next week and see if we can’t keep moving forward.”
Central has one final match before heading into Eastern South Dakota Conference tournament play. The Golden Eagles will host Sioux Falls Christian next Saturday.
Roncalli heads to Milbank on Tuesday for two matches, facing the host Bulldogs along with Lennox.
