BRANDON – The Aberdeen Central girls’ soccer squad found itself in unfamiliar territory on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles fell behind early, trailed for much of the game and eventually fell for the first time this season in a 2-1 setback to Brandon Valley in an Eastern South Dakota Conference contest.

The Lynx struck quickly on a goal by Madison Peterson in the eighth minute.

“We didn’t play well in the first half. We were out of position and didn’t keep our shape as we went forward,” said Central coach Merle Aske. “We made a mistake in the back and that cost us in the first half.”

The Eagles rebounded in the second half and knotted the score in the 64th minute on a goal by Deshani Peters, assisted by Courtney Nipp.

However, that lead was short lived as Brandon Valley jumped in front again five minutes later on a goal by Mara Nelson.

“We played better in the second half,” Aske said, “but need to finish better as we missed the last connection a few times that cost us putting more pressure on the goal.”

The Lynx finished with three more shots on goal in the contest.

“We have to be a little sharper through the midfield to create more chances,” Aske said.

Central, 5-1-1, returns to the pitch Tuesday at Sioux Falls Roosevelt.
