All three sets were there for the taking, and Huron grabbed each one of them.

The Tigers scored the final four points of both the first and second sets, and then scored five unanswered points late in the third for a sweep over Aberdeen Central at Golden Eagles Arena Tuesday night. Fourth-rated Huron won the Eastern South Dakota Conference match 25-22, 25-20, 25-22.

“They were 50-50 sets. I really don’t feel like we played very well tonight. I felt like we were flat,” said Central coach Jackie Bindenagel. “I just felt like there were a lot of balls at the net that we didn’t take care of. Their defense is very good and we know that about them, and they were in system a lot.”

The Tigers were the aggressor throughout the tight match. Brynn Gose finished with double-digit kills as Huron repeatedly attacked the net.

The Golden Eagles kept things close, thanks in part to 82 digs on the night. However, they could never get a cushion to work with.

“You can only play defense for so long,” Bindenagel said. “We needed to get them out of system a little bit more than we did tonight.”

Huron led the opening set 19-14 before Central battled back and eventually grabbed a brief 22-21 edge. However, the Tigers finished off that set with four straight points, three coming by Gose on a pair of kills sandwiched around a block.

The Tigers led the second set 21-17 before Central closed the gap to 22-20 on back-to-back kills by Lauryn Burckhard. That’s when Huron scored the final four points of that set to grab a two-set lead.

The third set was also tight and the Eagles led 18-16 before Huron rattled off five consecutive points for a lead it never lost. While Central hung tough it was unable to catch the Tigers after that.

“They did go on runs and we didn’t do a very good job of slowing anything down at the net,” Bindenagel said. “They’re a really quick offense, like probably quicker than we’ll see, and our block was late.”

Huron improved to 9-1 on the season and scored its second win over Central on the season.

“I thought Huron played a great game,” Bindenagel said, “and I just felt like we were a beat slow on so many plays.”

Burckhard, an eighth-grader, led Central with 11 kills. Leah Gough followed with seven. Sydney Evans finished with 36 digs. Sawyer Bahr had 15 digs, and Anna Malchow and Madison Miller 12 apiece.

The Golden Eagles, 5-5 on the season, travel to top-rated O’Gorman for a match on Monday. The Knights have one of the premier players in the state.

“We played really well with Lincoln and Washington and we feel like we’re right there,” Bindenagel said. “Obviously, we need to control Bergen Reilly, but let’s see what we can do.”
