A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Sept. 4-10:
Last year on Sept. 4, 2021: Dakota Wesleyan defeated Mount Marty 20-3 in front of 3,000 fans at Crane-Youngworth Field in Yankton. It was the first football game ever for Mount Marty, which has been preparing for this opener for the past two years. The last time Yankton hosted a college football game was Nov. 3, 1984, when Yankton defeated Dakota State 10-7 on the same field (since remodeled).
10 years ago on Sept. 4, 2012: The University of Oklahoma men’s and women’s cross country teams open their seasons with 30 percent of the Sooners top 10 runners from South Dakota: Hilary Krein of Eureka along with Jessica Engel and Bill Kogel of Sioux Falls Roosevelt.
20 years ago on Sept. 4, 2002: The Sioux Falls Lincoln girls’ tennis team has now won 90 straight matches over the last five years, including the last five state titles.
30 years ago on Sept. 4, 1992: The Aberdeen Roncalli football team defeated Groton 21-0 as Travis Gormley threw for three touchdowns (Phil Engler, Jeremy Bendewald and Shad Baloun).
40 years ago on Sept. 7, 1982: Well after Midnight in Aberdeen, two teams from Chicago battled for the 16-inch Slow-Pitch Softball National Championship. The Park Avenue Spats, led by tourney MVP Jim Fanta, ripped the Chicago Runts 14-1 for the title. Several hours later in the early evening at the nearby horseshoe pits in Aberdeen, Ed Thorstad of Spearfish won his first State Horseshoe Championship. Finishing second was the defending champion Leigh Dunker of Warner, who has won 29 state titles.
50 years ago on Sept. 9, 1972: In his debut as the SDSU football coach, John Gregory’s Jackrabbits dismantled visiting Eastern Montana 73-0.
