RAPID CITY – Aberdeen Central grabbed a fifth place finish and a sixth place finish in doubles action during the opening day of the Class AA State Tennis Tournament in Rapid City.

The Golden Eagles also won five of their six singles matches on the day which saw the majority of the matches played indoors because of rainy weather.

The flight three doubles team of Laney Gonsor and Reece Comstock lost their opening match, but bounced back to claim a pair of victories and get fifth place.

“It ended with a highlight,” said Central coach John Vogel.

While the duo lost a tough 10-8 decision to a team from Sioux Falls Lincoln, they were able to regroup and win the last two matches.

“They did a good job of keeping focus and doing that,” Vogel said.

The flight two doubles tandem of Carly Comstock and Livia Douglas split four matches on the day and ended up taking sixth place. That tandem was able to pull off a tie-breaker victory to get into the fifth place match.

“They fell down in the match and they fell down in the breaker,” Vogel said.

The Eagles are currently sitting in sixth place with 148 points. They will have plenty of opportunities to score many more points when action resumes today with three rounds of singles.

Central has five players in the quarterfinals.

“It’s just such an odd format, how they did all the doubles today, basically,” Vogel said. “Now, (Friday) it will just be singles. Hopefully, it will work out for us.”
