The post season is here and it promises to be an interesting journey for Class A volleyball squads.

The road to the state tournament begins with regional tournaments and continues through the SoDak 16. While there is always plenty of emotion and drama when it comes to the playoffs, this year’s Class A run to the state tourney might be even more intriguing.

Sioux Falls Christian, which has been the top-rated team all season, ended up fifth in overall seed points, while Dakota Valley, which was rated second all year, landed in the sixth position. Time will soon tell how things will shake out.

Each of the top two teams from the regions will advance to SoDak16 matches.

Here is a capsule look at each area region:

Region 1A Tuesday and Thursday at Roncalli, Redfield, higher seeds

Things could get interesting in this region before all is settled.

Aberdeen Roncalli earned the top seed, but lost to both second-seeded Redfield and third-seeded Milbank Area. The Cavaliers did defeat potential semifinal foes Webster and Groton. Those two should have a close contest in the first round as Webster won a previous matchup in five sets.

Look for quite a battle in the other semi if the seeds hold up. Redfield defeated Milbank Area in five sets in a previous encounter and a rematch would likely go down to the wire as well.

Teams W L

Aberdeen Roncalli 14-9

Redfield 17-12

Milbank Area 18-10

Webster 14-12

Groton 12-14

Tiospa Zina 11-16

Sisseton 8-18

Waubay-Summit 4-19

Tuesday’s Matches: (at Aberdeen Roncalli) Waubay-Summit vs. Aberdeen Roncalli 6 p.m.; Groton vs. Webster, 7:30 p.m.; (at Redfield) Sisseton vs. Redfield 6 p.m.; Tiospa Zina vs. Milbank Area, 7:30 p.m.

Thursday’s Matches: Semifinals at highest remaining seeds.

Region 2A Tuesday and Thursday at Elkton-Lake Benton, Hamlin, higher seeds

This has to be the most top-heavy region in the state, regardless of class.

There are five teams which have won at least 18 games this season and one of them will be heading home after the opening round, and two others won’t survive the week.

Elkton-Lake Benton is the top seed and lost to just one Class A team all season. However, neither Estelline-Hendricks nor Sioux Valley would be an easy foe in a potential semifinal match.

Hamlin is no stranger to post-season success. The Chargers are the second seed and lost three of their four total matches in one day at the Sanford Pentagon Tournament. Florence-Henry, which has won 22 matches, likely awaits in the semis.

Thursday’s Matches: Semifinals at highest remaining seeds.

Region 6A Tuesday and Thursday at the higher seeds

Everything points to the top two teams getting out of this region and advancing to the SoDak 16.

Top-seeded Miller and second-seeded Mobridge-Pollock should be clear favorites in their matches.

Miller has won 11 matches in a row with its only two losses on the season coming to top-rated Class B Warner.

Mobridge-Pollock has lost its last couple of matches, but the Tigers should be gearing up for a long post-season run.
