
A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Oct. 9-15:
Last year on Oct. 9, 2021: The NSU football team held on to defeat Winona State 52-49 to spoil the Warriors’ homecoming. The Wolves’ last points came on Payton Eue’s 38-yard field goal with 7:42 left in the game. NSU had lost 14 straight games to Winona and last beat the Warriors 37-34 on Oct. 30, 1999. In that 1999 game, the two teams each scored two touchdowns in the final 17 minutes, taking the lead with each TD. NSU got the last touchdown with 3:30 left on a Tefua Bloomfield one-yard run and Pete Peterson PAT.
10 years ago on Oct. 10, 2012: Dirt-track auto racer Chad Becker of Aberdeen won the WISSOTA Late Model national title.
20 years ago on Oct. 12, 2002: For the second week in a row in Vermillion, the USD football team won in overtime. South Dakota defeated Augustana 16-10 in the second overtime on David Hudspeth’s two-yard TD run. On Oct. 5, the Coyotes defeated North Dakota State 40-37 on Cody Butler’s 27-yard field goal in the third overtime. The Coyotes would go 3-8 on the season, but lost five games by seven points or less.
30 years ago on Oct. 9, 1992: Frederick-Hecla nipped Doland-Conde 16-8 on the strength of touchdown runs from Don Nickelson (1 yard) and Troy Knecht (56 yards).
40 years ago on Oct. 15, 1982: Rick Kline threw two touchdown passes (Steve Washenberger and Rich Schimdt) while teammate Tony Keelin intercepted a pass for a TD in Aberdeen Roncalli’s 19-6 win over Groton.
50 years ago on Oct. 9, 1972: The Northern State junior varsity football team scored a 13-12 win at Jamestown. The Wolves went on a game-winning 75-yard touchdown drive that was highlighted by Tim Hofer’s 50-yard run and his three-yard scoring run with 30 seconds left. NSU’s Rick Carlson broke the tie by booting the PAT.
