Looking Back

A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Oct. 30-Nov. 5:

Last year on Oct. 30, 2021: The NSU football team defeated Moorhead 33-27 to improve to 7-2 for the first time since 1999. Brett Brenton scored what turned out to be the winning TD of the game on his one-yard run for the Wolves.

10 years ago on Nov. 3, 2012: Warner defeated Herreid-Selby Area in the football semifinals. Warner coach Tom Kulesa got his 100th career win in the quarterfinals and HSA coach Jeff Kosters got his 100th in the first round.

20 years ago on Nov. 2, 2002: The South Dakota High School Activities Association has started to list in its newsletter the instances where a coach, athlete or fan is ejected from a game for unsportsmanlike conduct. It’s part of the SDHSAA’s plan to improve sportsmanship among schools, athletes, coaches and fans. Personal identities aren’t listed, but the school, sport and date it occurred are noted. The first listing showed 18 ejections, all involving football, with 16 players and two coaches ejected from the start of the season through Oct. 12.

30 years ago on Oct. 31, 1992: The Hoven girls’ won their seventh Class B state cross country title in 10 years. Coach Chuck Seurer’s Greyhounds were led by Class B champion Amy Van Dyke.

40 years ago on Oct. 30, 1982: Willow Lake won the Class B girls’ cross country state team championship. The school added the sport midway through the season and only competed in three meets: conference, region and state.

50 years ago on Nov. 1, 1972: South Dakota sports fans are still talking about last week’s state cross country meet on Oct. 27 in Brookings. In Class AA, Sioux Falls Lincoln senior Jim Reinhart ran into a 20-mph wind but still finished the 2.2-mile course in a state record time of 10 minutes, 34.2 seconds. It was Reinhart’s 34th consecutive AA cross country race win in a row, his third state title as well as Sioux Falls Lincoln’s third straight team title. Meanwhile, Jay Monfore of Miller won the Class A state title as he did in 1970 (he missed the 1971 state meet because of an injury). A short time after his afternoon state title run, Monfore quarterbacked Miller to a 22-14 win over Gettysburg by throwing the game-winning TD to Bob Losey. Finally, St. Francis won the Class B team title with a near perfect performance with a score of seven (six was perfection). Pius Eagleman of St. Francis won the race and his teammates Willard Runs Above and Gilford Running finished second and fourth. Craig Magadanz of Grant-Deuel finished third as only four seconds separated the second-, third- and fourth-place finishers.
