WEBSTER – The Milbank Area boys and Clark-Willow Lake girls captured team championships, and the Aberdeen Roncalli boys qualified as a team for the state meet during the Region 1A cross country meet Thursday afternoon.

Payton Brown of Milbank Area won the boys’ race, while Halle Bauer of Great Plains Lutheran topped the field in the girls’ race.

Roncalli finished third in the boys’ team standings and as a result will take the entire team to the state meet next weekend in Huron.

“It’s always good when you can get a team into state,” said Roncalli coach Brady Lesnar. “The boys team ran well and did what they needed to get in. I’m proud of their accomplishments.”

The Cavaliers were led by Garrett Griffin who finished eighth and Paul Gutenkauf who was 10th.

“Garrett Griffin had a heck of a day, placing in the top ten and then bolting out to get to the football game to play,” Lesnar said “Paul and Keylnn (Mount) competed excellently. Matt Peterson ran on a hurt ankle and got 21st. Isaac Price was in the mix, too.”

Roncalli seventh-grader Addison Cassady finished fifth on the girls’ side, but the Cavaliers were just outside of the cutoff for taking a team to state, finishing fourth.

“Addison had an outstanding meet and is a good point in the season and peaking at the right time,” Lesnar said. “The girls team competed hard and gave their all. It got them fourth and a few points shy of third and qualifying. I’m proud of what they have done regardless.”
